The simplest looking handset here and the interface is straightforward.  Satellite navigation is basic with no GPS on board, although a Bluetooth accessory is available.  Instead, the phone uses network and wireless signals to pinpoint your position and enables you to route-plan from there.  This works well, but is nowhere near as good as GPS.

A high-end offering that’s one of the most stylish mobiles here.  Google Maps takes on the navigation duty and the location information is gathered using the network signal and wireless networks.  This is fine for finding a local restaurant in a new city but not for serious route planning.

The ultimate business phone obviously requires GPS and this classy handset has it pre-installed.  The large screen makes it great for in-car viewing.  There’s no voice direction as standard but there are third party apps available, including one from Garmin (£60).

The screen is small, but it’s just about big enough for in-car use, where the decent battery life also comes in useful.  Being able to access Nokia Maps and spoken directions for specific regions for a short period of time makes sense if you’re planning a one-off trip.

The large screen and quick location lock are great for satelite navigation, but the battery dries up quickly.  The lack of audible commands means it’s less than ideal.  However, the search function quickly brings up lots of useful points of interest.
